The Bloke - a PC-rated urban Commoner

A character class for 3.5e D&D

UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Note - this is flat out better than a Commoner (not that that's hard). It should be roughly equal, level for level, to a PC class, but it's not intended for adventuring. It's unlikely that you'll want to take levels in Bloke except for RP purposes, as few of its abilities are useful outside a town setting.

The bloke is the salt of the earth common man (or woman), who lives from one day to another in a village, town or city, minding his own business. Ale, gambling, work, gossip, family life and other simple pleasures make up the Bloke's days, occasionally livened by duty in the militia. Blokes fill the ranks of the unskilled and semi-skilled labourers, carpenters, builders, teamsters and miners that make urban life possible.

Adventures: Not if he can help it.

Characteristics: The bloke is simple and straightforward. Not necessarily stupid, but neither is he renowned for intellect.

Alignment: Any.

Religion: Most blokes visit the local church (whatever it may be) each holy day, and observe the major festivals, but have little interest in the esoterica of religious doctrine.

Background: Most blokes are drawn from the ranks of the urban working classes or the peasantry.

Races: Almost all races include blokes, though they are less common among the elves, who tend towards yeomanry.

Other classes: Many other classes find the bloke useful and dependable on his own turf, limited though that may be.

Brawler (Ex): A bloke can fight with any improvised weapon with a lesser penalty: -2 instead of -4.
Sherpa (Ex): A bloke adds his class level to his strength for purposes of determining encumbrance levels, but he is still restricted to carrying a total amount no greater than a Heavy Load for his actual strength.
Basic Security (Ex): A bloke is used to pickpockets, cheats and thieves. He gains +4 to any roll to spot a Sleight of Hand attempt.
Favoured Class: Levels in the bloke class are discounted regarding multiclassing experience penalties.
Improved Unarmed Strike: A 2nd level bloke gains the Improved Unarmed Strike feat.
Alcohol Tolerance (Ex): A bloke of second level or more can drink his class level times as much alcohol as a normal member of his race without suffering penalties due to intoxication or suffering a hangover. This ability improves with level.

Simple Weapon: A 3rd level bloke gains proficiency with a simple weapon.
Endurance: A 4th level bloke gains the Endurance feat.
Simple Weapon Focus: A 4th level bloke gains the Weapon Focus feat with a simple weapon.
Rouse Mob: A 5th level bloke can xxxxxxxx (as Hue and Cry: Bluff or Diplomacy to make them obey him, in a vague sense).
Skill Focus: A 5th level bloke gains the Skill Focus feat in any one of his class skills.
